Why Haven't I Heard More About Prednisone?

If prednisone is so effective, why haven’t I read more about it?

Good question. There is no good answer. It is not clear why, for example, secretin continues to make the headlines and prednisone (which had a brief stint in the media in 1996) does not.

Some possible explanations:

  • Treating autism with prednisone is still considered an off-label use and not prescribed by most doctors (however, so is secretin, so that isn’t a good answer).

  • Prednisone has strong side-effects (but these are known and controllable, where again, the long-term side effects of secretin are unknown).

  • Prednisone is not a "natural" Rx (not herbal, vitamin or a "natural" hormone), which can be seen by some as worse than the problem.

  • None of these explanations is particularly satisfactory; the main reason for this webpage is to make the information available to parents.
